Save gas for a safe winter: our Executive Director, Dr Fatih Birol
Sets out a 5 action plan on how the EU could prepare for the upcoming winter and what measures should be taken to save more gas for storage.
Our analysis shows, that even storages 90% full, the EU would face heightened risks of supply disruptions if there is a complete Russian cut-off from the beginning of the gas winter.
The risk of supply disruptions would be particularly elevated in the second half of the heating season, when storages would be already depleted below 30%, which in turn would reduce their withdrawal rates and reactivity (due to the drop in reservoir pressure).
There is a lot of uncertainties in the market for the months ahead.
But Europe can face this crisis only in full solidarity, and with all actors on board, policy makers, industries and most importantly us, EU citizens.
We are entering the critical phase of storage filling, with just 2 months and half to go until 1st October: we need to save gas, for a safe winter now!
