Global biomethane production rose by an estimated 15% (or 1 bcm) largely led by the United States and the European Union.
In Europe, biomethane supply grew by around 13%, adding close to 0.5 bcm of green gas into the system. France and Denmark are are the undisputed champions, with biomethane now accounting for over 30% of Denmark’s gas consumption.
And while last year’s growth is impressive, we would need an annual growth rate of 30% to reach the EU’s ambitious 35 bcm target by 2030.
This would require an acceleration at scale, with more appealing support mechanisms and less red tap for biogas/biomethane projects.
What is your view? Can the EU reach its 35 bcm target? What are the key challenges?
