Caught in cold: European daily gas consumption rose by a staggering 50% since last week, amidst a winter-like coldsnap in April.

Storage sites, which already entered injection mode at the end of March, played a key role in meeting additional gas demand at first by reducing injection rates and second by turning back into withdrawal mode.

In total, European storage sites met roughly half of incremental demand, with net withdrawals ramping to over 300 mmcm/d just in two days.

To put into perspective, 300 mmcm suffice to meet the daily heating demand of over 15 million households on a cold winter day… even if it is in April.

This highlights the unmatched flexibility value of underground gas storage and the security of supply it provides to greater energy system.
