Goodbye Groningen: Grandpa Groningen is taking its well-deserved retirement on 1 October when gas production will cease from Europe’a largest field.
Groningen was the founding pillar of the Northwest European gas market. The field’s gas production reached a record of 88 bcm in 1976.
As a consequence of the earthquakes, the Dutch government adopted first production caps and then in March 2018 decided the phase-out the field as soon as possible and the latest by 2030.
Groningen’s gas production plummeted from over 50 bcm in 2013 to 4.6 bcm in 2022, while its production quota for Gas Year 2022/23 was fixed at 2.8 bcm.
What is your view? How will the Dutch gas industry evolve in the post-Groningen era?
