Spain declared state of emergency amid an unprecedented power outage, leaving millions without electricity.
Spain’s power supply dropped by around 65% starting from midday, causing widespread blackouts across the country, and effecting both Portugal and southern France.
The reasons of the massive outage remains unclear for now, although Portugal’s electricity TSO noted that anomalous oscillations in the high voltage lines might have caused the outage.
Spain’s very unfortunate power outage comes just days after the IEA’s Energy Security Summit and is a stark reminder that energy systems should be strengthened in the wake of both traditional and new energy supply risks.
What is your view? What could have caused Spain’s power outage? How long will it take to restore adequate power supply? What lessons can be learnt?
