In January 2021, the Gas TSO of Ukraine (GTSOU) transported 0,44 billion cubic meters of gas from Europe to Ukraine, including through a backhaul – 0,40 (92%). Re-export of gas from Ukraine to Europe during this period amounted to 0,24 billion cubic meters, transit through the Ukrainian GTS to Europe amounted to 3,86 billion cubic meters.
By order of clients GTSOU transported 0,44 billion cubic meters of gas last month from Europe to Ukraine. This is 422% more than in December, due to the increased demand for natural gas because of weather conditions in the country, and is equal to the figures for the same period in 2020. In particular, from Slovakia to Ukraine GTSOU transported 0,04 billion cubic meters, from Hungary – 0,40 billion cubic meters. It was imported 92% by backhaul. Almost all of the gas was sent for use in the domestic market of Ukraine.
In January 15 traders ordered gas transportation services from the EU to Ukraine, including 5 Ukrainian companies and 10 foreign ones.
During the reporting period, the re-export of gas from Ukraine to the EU countries amounted to 0,24 billion cubic meters (whereas in January last year there was practically no export). 0,23 billion cubic meters were exported in the “customs warehouse” mode, 0,17 billion cubic meters of which in the shorthaul mode. Shorthaul and “customs warehouse” services were used by 12 companies, including 2 domestic.
Gas transit through the Ukrainian GTS to Europe amounted to 3,86 billion cubic meters of gas, 51% more compared to January 2020. Decrease compared to December 2020 – 32%, due to the terms of the current transit contract*.
In the westerly direction, 3,54 billion cubic meters of gas were transited. In particular, 0,39 billion cubic meters were transited to Poland, 2,23 billion cubic meters – to Slovakia, 0,92 billion cubic meters – to Hungary. In the southern direction, the transit amounted to 0,55 billion cubic meters, 0,15 billion cubic meters of which were transited to Romania and 0,39 billion cubic meters were transited to Moldova.
“The current contract with Gazprom provides for a planned reduction in gas transit through the territory of Ukraine. According to the contract, Gazprom is obliged to pay for 40 billion cubic meters of gas, which is 25 billion cubic meters below the contractual obligations of 2020. Now we see that despite high gas prices in Europe, there has been no significant additional growth in transit volumes. Moreover, not all booked and paid capacities were used. This indicates that the existing capacities can meet all transit needs, there is no need to build an additional gas pipeline Nord Stream 2.
Ukrainian GTS can provide additional injection of 55 billion cubic meters and even more. We cooperate with our European and American partners and count on their further support in countering the implementation of Nord Stream 2, which is an exclusively political and not an economic project”, – said Sergiy Makogon, CEO of Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine.
*Transit contract between NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine and Russian OJSC Gazprom, concluded at the end of 2019 for a period of five years. It provides for Gazprom’s booking of transit capacity in the amount of 65 billion cubic meters (178 million cubic meters/day) in 2020 and 40 billion cubic meters (110 million cubic meters/day) in 2021-2024.
