TTF prices soar following Qatar announcement

TTF prices soared by more than 4% on Monday (6 October), after Qatar announced the temporary suspension of maritime navigation activities due to a technical malfunction in the Global Positioning System (GPS).

This event, hopefully short-lived, highlights once again the critical importance of Strait of Hormuz to global gas security. the Strait accounts for around one-fifth of global LNG trade.

And this also shows, that new risks to supply distortion are appearing, necessitating a continued rethinking of energy and gas supply security in an increasingly complex and fragmented world.

On Sunday (Oct 5), the Qatari Ministry of Transport announced the immediate halt of maritime activities for all ships navigating in the proximity of Qatar, including the country’s large LNG carriers fleet managed by Qatar Energy.

According to the announcement, a GPS malfunction, which is still ongoing, could affect the accuracy of the maritime navigation devices and safety of sailing.

A very problematic issue since the Persian Gulf is full of inbound and outbound carriers and tankers transporting up to 20% of the daily global oil and gas daily traded.

Global gas prices reacted to the news with a bullish increase on Monday, one of the highest in recent months. The Ministry has not provided any reason for the GPS technical fault and as of today navigation continues to be banned for non-conventional vessels during evening hours as the malfunction persists.

Qatar has seen its security and energy security largely affected in recent weeks with the attack by the IDF on the Hamas delegation in Doha. The country sits in a very delicate position, hoping negotiations will fix the situation in Gaza.
